A quote from Claude Medford Jr., Choctaw-Apache artist, basketweaver, historian, Louisiana, 1982

I don't know why these traditions mean so much to me, more than my own life.  I don't know what childhood incident, if any, programmed me in this direction, but if I am not doing these things, making these things, speaking of these things, I feel as if I don't exist.

I get those feelings, stronger at some times than others.  Perhaps that is why I keep this Medicine Wheel at the farm. It changes from year to year, sometimes more stones, sometimes tokens for the spirit keepers or elemental clans.  This is the 2014 version with stones  the four directions and a Creator Center stone.
